Research and Roman Ruins: ChE Undergrad Emma Milloway Travels to Tarragona, Spain

Emma Milloway is a sophomore in Chemical Engineering. For her first study abroad experience, Emma chose the Research Exchange Program at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) for the talented faculty as well as the location. In the lab, Emma worked to determine the effects that heavy metals have on the growth of micro algae with the Environmental Analysis and Management research group at URV. After studying the Spanish language and culture for years, the beautiful country was a perfect match.

In addition to enjoying Tarragona, she had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona and Valencia with her peers during the program. Emma also traveled within Spain after the program ended, getting to see even more of the wonderful country. Her favorite place was Barcelona because of the combination of old and new and the location on the Mediterranean Sea.

“I really enjoyed my time in Spain! Probably the best part about staying in Tarragona was getting to walk through Roman ruins on the way to the beach every day after work. Every once and a while it would hit you just how much history was there in the one city. Being right on the Mediterranean ocean was also a great way to spend a couple months,” Emma says.
