ChE Co-op Students on an International Assignment
Two Northeastern Chemical Engineering students are on International Co-op Fall 2009. During their free time, they visited the Louvre in Paris and may travel to Venice or Rome to enjoy the sites there as well.
On the left is Li Buessing, CHME 2010. His third co-op experience is at Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies in Paris, France, working with water purification systems.
On the right is Todd Eaton, CHME 2010. His third co-op is a research position working with Aerogels at Italy Universita Degli Studi Di Genova, Italy.
Honorable Mention in the 2009 National Design Team Competition
Chemical Engineering students Joseph Clegg ('09), Andrew Grant ('09), and Kyle Stephens ('09).
ChE Senior Design Team Wins National AIChE Safety Award
Chemical Engineering Senior Design Team members Rhiannon Quirk, James Sims, and Elizabeth Wienslaw won the Jack Wehman SACHE Award (SACHE Team Safety Award), a prestigious national award related to safety considerations in their 2009 AIChE National Student Design Problem Contest submission.
ChE Undergraduate Student Wins Best Undergraduate Research Poster Award
Martina List (class of 2012) won the Best Undergraduate Research Poster in Engineering and Technology at the EXPO held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Interface Engineering Laboratory at Northeastern University. Her poster titled: "/In-situ/ surface characterization with RHEED-TRAXS" presented her work performed under the direction of Professor Katherine Ziemer and graduate student Bing Sun.
Congratulations go to Martina from ChE Department Chair, faculty and staff.
ChE Undergraduate Student Wins Spring 2009 Provost Undergraduate Research Award
Todd Eaton (Class of 2010) is the proud recipient of the Spring 2009 Provost Undergraduate Research award.
Todd, who was advised by Professor Carolyn Lee-Parsons, won the award for his project on "Improving Fatty Acid Production from Microalgai Cultures for Biodiesel Application."
Congratulations to Todd from the ChE Department Chair, Faculty, and Staff.
ChE Undergraduate Students Wins AIChE Northeast Region Paper Competition
Kimberly Wall (class of 2009) is the winner of the 2009 AIChE Northeast Region Paper competition held at the AIChE Regional meeting in March.
Kim will go on to represent the Northeast Region at the National Competition in Nashville, Tennessee in November 2009.
Congratulations Kim from the Chair, Faculty, and Staff of Chemical Engineering.
ChE Undergraduate Student Wins NU Outstanding Co-op Award
Abby Deleault (class of 2009) won one of the NU Outstanding Co-op Awards for 2009. Congratulations Abby from the ChE Department Chair, Faculty and Staff.
American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholar Award
Congratulations to Mark Michaelman (class of 2009) on his achievement of an American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholar Award. Mark will be heading to Harvard to pursue an MBA.
ChE Graduate Students to Participate in International Exchange Program
ChE Ph.D. students Courtney Pfluger and Mariam Ismail have been invited by the The Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) of the American Chemical Society Northeastern Section (NESACS) and the NESACS Education Committee to participate in an educational exchange program to take place in Essen, Germany, on March 8-15, 2009, as guests of the Jungchemikerforum (Young Chemists Committee, JCF) of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society, GDCh). Please join us in congratulating them on their accomplishment.
ChE Graduate Student's Paper Accepted to Macromolecular Rapid Communications
Courtney Pfluger's paper has been accepted to Macromolecular Rapid Communications (December 2008).
The paper pertains to the deposition and cross-linking a biocompatible and biodegradable thin film polymer using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition.
Courtney (class of 2008) was advised by Professors Daniel Burkey and Rebecca Carrier.
Bing Sun (Ph.D), under the advisement of Professor Katherine Ziemer, did XPS analysis data and the write up for the paper.
Congratulations Courtney and Bing Sun from the Chair, Faculty and Staff of the ChE Department.

Macromolecular_Abstract.pdfChE Faculty members received 2008 National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award
Dr. Rebecca Carrier, Assistant Professor and Dr. Shashi Murthy, Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering, were awarded the 2008 NSF CAREER Award.
Rebecca Carrier was awarded the 2008 NSF CAREER award for her integrated education and research plan entitled, "Mechanistic Studies and Modeling of Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery Systems."
Dr. Carrier's research will shed light on the influence of nanoemulsions, which are used as drug delivery systems and actually naturally exist in the GI tract after food ingestion, on the absorption of drugs and other compounds into the bloodstream. This information could enable the delivery of drugs that may not otherwise be viable products and shed light on the "food effect," a poorly understood phenomenon that influences the oral bioavailability of most drugs. Integrated with this research is a practice-oriented educational plan including graduate co-op experiences, design of an industry-mentored course and development of avenues for other faculty to foster collaborations with Northeastern's industrial co-op partners...
