Research is an integral part of our experiential learning portfolio in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern. Our undergraduate and graduate students are gaining real-world experience by working with our faculty to uncover innovation solutions to solve today’s pressing global challenges. Here are examples of student stories featuring their experiences conducting research in the exciting field of chemical engineering.
In the summer of 2014, Kevin Narang embarked to Tarragona, Spain to partake in the Dept. of Chemical Engineering’s Research Exchange Program. He worked with a team at the local university, La University Rovira i Virgili (URV), to study seasonal thermal energy storage. Utilizing the computer simulation program, TRNSYS, the model incorporated local weather data and analyzed the financial and environmental impact in comparison with traditional heating and cooling units. At the conclusion of the trip, Kevin gave a formal presentation of his findings via Skype to Prof. Webster and members of the local Chemical Engineering Department.
“Tarragona is somewhat of a melting pot in that the University’s strong research program attracts students from all over the world. In my lab alone, several different countries were represented. I also had the opportunity to travel to 7 countries during my time abroad. Being able to interact with people of various cultures was an exciting experience,” Kevin remarks.
Three years later, Kevin has graduated from Northeastern University and applied to medical school. He has been accepted to the University of Alabama School of Medicine where he will be attending this fall. Kevin appreciates how his experience in Spain contributed to his pursuit of medicine. “I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to maintain my passion for science and research, but also to meet new people and help them in a meaningful way. Medicine provides these opportunities to me, and many more,” he explains.
